Robosub

The Application The annual, week-long Robosub AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) Competition is held in San Diego, California every summer. Teams from prestigious colleges such as Cornell and MIT participate, and of-ten win. The field widened a few years ago, however, when a team of students from a small high school in Arizona, Carl Hayden Community High School, entered the competition. And, what happened was quite amazing. Amazing because a group of high school students showed the collegiate competitors that they were up to the challenge, and successfully made it to the final......

Gas Pump

The Challenge The data communications protocols used for communications between gas pumps, credit card readers, key pads and the controlling computer have never been standardized. One company’s gas stations used a current loop circuit to measure how much gas was dispensed and RS-485 for communications with credit card readers and the keypads. They wanted to convert all of this data to Ethernet for use by the local controlling computers as well as the company’s larger network. The Solution B+B designed and built a custom solution that solved the problem in a single......

Lottery

The Challenge A European national lottery wanted to position lottery machines in locations that were convenient to their customers. The locations were not, however, always installation-friendly. Local circumstances often made fiber or copper cable impractical or prohibitively expensive. The lottery needed a wireless solution that was robust enough for both indoor and outdoor applications, and highly secure. The Solution The lottery equipped its machines with quad band B+B SmartWorx cellular routers. The B+B routers provide Ethernet connections anywhere there’s cellular service as well as ample bandwidth, even for applications that require video.......

Manufacturer

The Challenge A heavy equipment manufacturer used Automated Guide Vehicles (AGVs) to transport their products along an assembly line. The AGVs followed a magnetic path along the floor, which worked well. The plant’s wired serial communications were also quite reliable. There was, however, no direct link between the mobile AGVs and the central PLC that directed the manufacturing processes at the various stations along the line. As the AGVs operated independently of one another, there were occasional collisions, which would shut down the line. The manufacturer needed a wireless solution that would......

Conveyor Belt

The Challenge A distribution center used a conveyor belt systems to transport a wide variety of products to appropriate locations. When all went well, products were delivered, stored and shipped back out with a minimum of trouble. But a breakdown in any of the motors running the conveyor belts could interfere with operations and cause unacceptable shipping delays. The distribution center decided to use remote monitoring and decision analytics to predict where and when, preventative maintenance could keep small problems from ballooning into major disruptions. The Solution A B+B SmartWorx value-added reseller......
