What Is The Internet of Things?

There’s a lot of hype surrounding the phrase “Internet of Things”, but what does it really mean for you? Mike Fahrion offers a pragmatic approach to realizing the potential for your business.

What is the Internet of Things?

The headlines and projections around the Internet of Things are really astounding. Billions of new connections and trillions of dollars. Numbers like that create a huge amount of hype. They also create a lot of excitement and anxiety with companies everywhere as they try to figure out how to use this nebulous concept of the Internet of Things to improve their business and stay ahead of the competition.

But the Internet of Things doesn’t have to be a nebulous or scary topic. In fact, you could argue that we’ve been doing it all along.

For example, it was over 10 years ago that fleet managers discovered that they could connect the OBDII port on their vehicles into their remote monitoring systems. And with that, they discovered that their vehicles are left idling over sixty percent of the time. If you’re a driver and your boss is paying for the fuel why bother shutting off the engine — keep the heat or the AC on. So, with that single piece of data they were able to dramatically improve the use of their assets.

That is the Internet of Things, in a nutshell. So the Internet of Things isn’t some scary, nebulous topic to be reached sometime in the future. The Internet of Things is really a journey and whether you realize it or not, you’re already on it.
